Locking cylinders in the paper industry
Initial situation
On paper machines, scrapers on rollers are moved pneumatically. In the event of a loss of compressed air or a fault, there is a risk that the cylinder or the carriage attached to it may slide back uncontrollably. This can lead to unwanted movements and production stoppages.
Objective
A reliable solution was required to hold the pneumatic cylinder securely in position in the event of a loss of compressed air and to prevent uncontrolled retraction. Depending on the application, it should be possible to configure the locking mechanism for the forward stroke, the return stroke or for both directions of movement.
Our solution
The pneumatic cylinder is fitted with an integrated pneumatic locking mechanism. In the event of a loss of compressed air or a fault, the cylinder’s movement is reliably locked and the slide is held in position.
The locking mechanism can be designed for the forward stroke, the return stroke or both directions of movement. Movement is only permitted again following a deliberate and controlled release.
Depending on the requirements, hydraulic or mechanical locking solutions can be implemented in addition to pneumatic ones. This allows the pneumatic cylinder to be optimally adapted to the specific application and the necessary safety requirements.
