Pneumatic Decoupling Cylinders for Rail Vehicles
Initial situation
Scharfenberg couplers on rail vehicles must decouple reliably and safely — even under adverse conditions such as extreme cold, changing weather exposure, and long-term continuous operation in rail service. At the same time, the available installation space at the coupler is highly limited and varies from one vehicle type to another, meaning standard solutions often reach their limits.
Objective
Development of a pneumatic decoupling cylinder that fits precisely into the available installation space of the respective coupler and ensures reliable, safe decoupling even under extreme operating conditions — particularly at low temperatures down to -60 °C.
Our solution
We develop pneumatic decoupling cylinders individually for each rail vehicle type, adapting the compact design precisely to the available installation space. Among other applications, the cylinders are used in Scharfenberg couplers, where they ensure reliable decoupling even under the harshest operating conditions.
To guarantee reliability during continuous operation, every cylinder undergoes extensive functional and cold chamber testing. Corrosion-resistant coatings provide reliable protection against weather exposure, while specially developed low-temperature seals enable safe operation down to -60 °C. An optimized low-friction design further ensures precise, reliable decoupling even under demanding conditions.
