Low-friction cylinders for precision control applications
Initial situation
When manufacturing curved glass panes, bending moulds must be adjusted with precision and sensitivity. The actuators used for this purpose must reliably execute minute movements whilst ensuring a high degree of repeatability.
Conventional pneumatic cylinders can reach their limits during very slow movements due to increased breakaway torque and the so-called stick-slip effect. In addition, the cylinder must be able to absorb any radial forces that arise without compromising precise guidance and positioning.
Objective
Objectives
• Smooth and precise movement
• Very low starting torque for reliable start-up behaviour
• Virtually stick-slip-free operation, even during slow movements
• High radial load capacity
• Backlash-free and precise guidance of the piston rod
Our solution
Our solution
A DRUMAG pneumatic low-friction cylinder is used, which has been specially developed for sensitive control and positioning tasks. The piston rod is mounted in integrated recirculating ball bushings, ensuring precise and virtually play-free guidance whilst simultaneously withstanding high radial forces.
Thanks to its specialised bearing and sealing technology, the cylinder has a very low breakaway torque and operates with virtually no stick-slip. This allows even slow and minute movements to be carried out smoothly, in a controlled manner and with high repeatability – ideal for precise adjustment tasks, such as positioning bending moulds in glass production.
